Frequently Asked Questions

If you can’t find the answer to your question, feel free to reach out – we are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Planning

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Every project begins with a free estimate so you can get a solid idea of budget and lead time. If your design needs full CAD drawings, colour & finish schedules and electrical planning, we may recommend a Design Visualisation Package.

How do I get a quick estimate?

The fastest way is to use our Online Design Form. Once we have received all the information we need.  We will reply with a riugh estimate based on your general layout, dimensions and selected finish.

What measurements and photos do I need to send?

A straight-on photo of your space(s) and three key dimensions:
• Width of the wall or alcove
• Ceiling height
• Desired depth (if known)
Don’t worry too much — we complete a full measured survey before manufacturing.

What are your lead times?

Lead times vary through the year as we build everything in our Oxfordshire workshop. We’re often booking 2–3 months ahead, so reaching out early is the best way to secure a slot.

Can you help me with initial ideas?

Absolutely, most people start with a vision, not technical drawings. We’ll guide you on everything including

  • Hanging Space vs Shelving,
  • Shaker Vs. Slab Doors
  • Drawer positions, dimensions & spacing
  • LED Lighting Options
  • Materials & Finishes

But don’t panic… we make it easy and effortless

When should I get in touch?

As early as possible – particularly if your goal is a bedroom transformation, upgraded living room media wall, or alcove cabinetry to be completed before a key date (moving in, new baby, guests, renovations etc.).

Design

How does the design process work?

We confirm your needs, measure precisely, then produce CAD drawings and optional photoreal visuals so you can clearly see your new furniture within your home. You’ll approve everything — layout, doors, colours, hardware all before anything is made.

Can I make changes to the design?

Yes. Our standard package comes with one round of revisions to perfect things like shelving positions, rail heights, handle choice and internal layout for larger more complex projects requiring our Upgraded Design Package, you have up to three revision rounds.

Can you work with awkward spaces and angled ceilings?

Yes — in fact, this is why bespoke exists. We design to follow eaves, uneven walls and period features, ensuring your home looks beautifully balanced and gains far more storage.

Can you include lighting, mirrors or special fittings?

Yes — including:
Sensor-activated LED hanging rails
Under-shelf LED lighting for ambience
Soft-close drawers | Under-mount Runner (so you don’t see the drawer slide hardware)
Cable-routing for TVs or charging stations
Bespoke shoe trays / pull-outs
We design these early to keep everything neat and accessible.

Can you design fitted furniture that matches the style of my home?

Yes — we design specifically for Oxford and Oxfordshire homes, from Georgian townhouses to new-builds. Door profiles, mouldings, proportions and finishes are chosen to feel like they’ve always belonged – whether that’s a classic alcove cupboard, a modern fitted media wall, or a minimal wardrobe with clean lines.

What door styles do you offer — sliding or hinged?

We mostly install hinged doors as they give the most access and suit period properties. If you require sliding door please let us know.

We are always adding to our ‘Built In Oxford FAQs’ page, please let us know what questions you have and we will do our best to answer promptly. Thank you.

Details

What materials do you use?

For most of our fitted furniture we use

  • Moisture resistant MDF boards = Painted
  • European oak veneers = Natural Wood

We also offer a range of hardwoods for trims and edging to increase durability.

Are finishes sprayed or hand-painted?

Our standard is a sprayed finish which is done in our Oxfordshire workshop. We can colour-match spray optimised painted to Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or your preferred brand.

For listed properties or characterful Oxford houses where we need to build in and blend on site, we can hand-finish certain elements after installation. That final touch ensures your fitted wardrobes feel designed into the architecture, not simply placed in front of it.

How do you handle skirting, coving and sockets?

We design everything around your home’s unique details. Furniture is scribed perfectly to walls, floors, and sometimes even wonky plaster — removing gaps and creating that true, “built-from-the-house” look.

Sockets, switches, radiators and access panels are planned in CAD before we make anything, so the final layout works beautifully both visually and practically. Whether you have deep skirting, ornate coving or a modern square-edge finish, the end result looks like it was always meant to be there.

What’s the difference between fully fitted and part-fitted?

Fully fitted = Furniture is built to the exact shape of your room (wall to wall and floor to ceiling) with every gap scribed and finished for a seamless, permanent look. It becomes part of your home’s architecture. Fully fitted makes the space look calmer and more complete.

Part-fitted offers the same high-quality cabinetry and design, but the furniture doesn’t completely wrap into the room. You may see:

  • Not fitted up to the ceiling (if desired)

  • One or two visible sides (if design requires)

It’s a great option when:

  • Ceilings are very high and a full build isn’t needed
  • There’s budget sensitivity
  • You prefer a freestanding aesthetic with bespoke internals

Part-fitted is more flexible and can be slightly more cost-efficient, while still giving you the strength and quality of a bespoke build.

Crafting

Where are your wardrobes made?

Every project is built from scratch in our Oxfordshire workshop — including cabinetry, door fabrication, hand-finishing and hardware installation. The craftspeople who make your furniture in the workshop also install it, we maintain quality control every step of the way and ensure the finished result matches the approved drawings perfectly.

How long does manufacturing take?

Most builds take 2–4 weeks, depending on the size of your furniture, whether it includes LED integration, oak veneered internals, curved details or bespoke mouldings. To keep you fully informed, you’ll know both your workshop production week and your installation week from the moment you book.

Can I visit the workshop?

Yes.Wwe welcome clients to visit during production. It’s a great opportunity to see your furniture being built, have a cup of tea and take a look at the craftsmanship that goes into every section and surface.

What tools and techniques do you use in the workshop?

We continually reinvest in our workshop to improve accuracy and efficiency. Much of our cabinetry is built using Festool track saw and table saw systems, giving us cleaner cuts and tighter tolerances on every component. Alongside this, we’re always on the lookout for specialist machinery. It’s a balance of modern precision and proven, workshop-tested tools that deliver exceptional results.

We’re a small Oxfordshire workshop — real people, real projects.
If there’s anything you’d like to know, just ask and we’ll give you a straightforward answer.

installation

Will I need to be home during installation?

Not always. Many of our Oxfordshire clients are working or out during fitting. As long as we have access to your home, we can install your bespoke fitted furniture without disruption. If you are in, we’ll check important details with you — such as door swing direction, handle height, and lighting preferences — to ensure your built-in wardrobes, alcove cupboards, or media wall are exactly as expected.

How long does installation take?

Most fully fitted wardrobes install within 1–3 days. Large fitted media walls or full-room storage designs may take slightly longer. We schedule everything so work flows smoothly — and your space never feels like a half-finished building site. Communication stays clear and calm, every day we’re in your home.

How should I prepare the room?

Please clear personal and fragile items from the area. We bring floor protection, dust management, and tidy, thoughtful working practices — especially important in period Oxford homes. A clear room helps us get straight to work and keeps everything safe.

Do you manage electrics, lighting and cables?

Yes — we can integrate LED wardrobe lighting, sensor rails, TV cables and hidden power supply into the design. If your project needs new sockets or switching, we arrange a qualified electrician to complete the work — ensuring your media wall, wardrobe, or alcove shelving performs perfectly without visible wires.

What if my walls or floors aren’t straight?

ery normal — especially in Victorian terraces, Georgian homes, and Oxfordshire cottages. We use professional scribing techniques to follow uneven surfaces and make your furniture appear perfectly straight and calm in the room. This level of finish is what sets true bespoke joinery apart.

Will there be dust and noise?

We minimise both. The majority of cutting and finishing is done in our Oxfordshire workshop, so installation on site is cleaner, faster and quieter than most people expect. We use dust extraction and protection materials as standard — your home is respected at every stage.

What happens if something needs adjusting after installation?

Before we leave, we run a full snag check with you. If a drawer or door needs a minor tweak once the furniture has settled, we return to fine-tune it. Our goal is that your bespoke fitted furniture feels perfect — not just on day one, but for years to come.

After Care

How do I care for painted or sprayed finishes?

A soft cloth and mild soap is all that’s required. Our workshop-sprayed finishes are durable and resistant to everyday use, especially in busy family bedrooms or living rooms. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives. If over time you get small knocks (normal with real life!), we can provide colour-matched touch-up, or refresh components if desired.

Can I add more shelves or accessories in future?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of bespoke joinery is that your furniture can evolve with you. We can add extra shelves, rails, or storage compartments later — especially useful in children’s bedrooms, growing wardrobes or expanding media and tech setups.

What should I do if a door or drawer needs adjusting later on?

If a hinge or drawer ever needs a tiny tweak to maintain perfect alignment, just let us know — we are always happy to return and adjust. It’s all part of long-term care.

Should I paint my room before or after installation?

After installation is preferred — especially for fully fitted wardrobes and alcove cupboards that are scribed tightly into walls and skirting. Final decorating once your furniture is installed gives the cleanest, most finished look.

Are the interiors easy to keep clean?

Yes — we only use wipeable internal finishes that are simple to maintain and designed for the realities of daily life. For wardrobes with oak-look internals, the surface is treated to resist marks and remain beautiful long-term.

Whether you’re considering a fitted wardrobe, alcove cupboards, shelving or a media wall… We’re here to guide you through every stage of the process.
